ECO4 is part of the UK government’s Energy Company Obligation, which makes the major energy companies pay to improve energy efficiency in older homes. Homeowners with boilers over twenty years old often qualify, as these systems are expensive to run and usually give the property a low EPC rating. Under ECO4, the boiler can be replaced at no cost to the homeowner. It is not a loan and nothing is repaid, as the funding comes directly from the energy suppliers.
The scheme can also include insulation or other upgrades such as solar panels if required to raise the property’s efficiency. This matters as the minimum EPC requirement for UK homes is expected to rise to band C by 2030. ECO4 allows eligible homeowners to have this work carried out now, fully funded through the energy companies’ legal obligation rather than the homeowner.
